Under the King Tran Anh Tong’s reign (XIII), Huyen Quang gave up his position, office and tittle to lead a religious life and resigned himself to asceticism which was diametrically opposed to common sense of human life.
With scepticaling, the King sent Diem Bich, an imperial maid, who was talented to write poems, sing and dance, disguised herself as a country girl forced to marry someone and had to leave home to go to Hoa Yen pagoda in Yen Tu mountain, for trying Huyen Quang. If Huyen Quang was false, he would be seductived by her rare beauty and refined talent. At that time, Diem Bich hat to entice Huyen Quang to give her a gold ingot which the King had offered him when he started going to become a monk. The gold ingot would be a witness about Huyen Quang’s truth and false heart.
Diem Bich had to be reluctant to follow the King’s awkward order. After having worked in Hoa Yen pagoda for a nearly year, she understood that he had noble and uncommon characters, and also had a fine poetic inspiration. It was also her aspiring after true love. The game suddenly became truth.
By naive and clumsy artifice, she hoped that she would have had the gold ingot, drawn Huyen Quang to leave Buddha’s door, return normal life with her. However, human’s life and want are always opposite to each other...
